Purchasing Books Online – Some Numbers

In my possession are two more books than I had when I woke up this morning. One, a Pulitzer Prize winner, required two decades of work by two authors. With a few clicks, I purchased the electronic version for $1.49 and had immediate access. That works out to less than $0.04 per author per year – just doesn’t seem fair.

The other, a paperback (out of print, not available electronically), I purchased online nine days ago. It set me back $0.01 – that’s right, a penny – plus $3.99 shipping and handling to place it in my mailbox today via snail mail. That’s a 39,900% markup, which works out to just less than 4,433% markup per day – also seems not quite right.
