Inspired by Pop Culture: A Yarn

The other day, as I photographed flowers out in front of the house, I recalled my childhood friend, Jack. We used to race big wheels until around when I started kindergarten. It really wasn’t fair, because I was a couple of years older than Jack, and that’s a big advantage when you’re five years old.

Anyway, I felt kind of guilty about winning at big wheels all the time, and I knew that Jack sort of looked up to me, so after we’d race, I would get on all fours and let Jack ride on my back over to the dandelion patch at his house. This always cheered him up, and I think that’s one of the reasons we were buds, even if some of the neighbors thought it was a little strange for me to transport Jack home in this fashion.

The bees, of course, loved the bright yellow dandelions. We spent a lot of time in Jack’s yard, and after awhile we started recognizing specific bees so well that we gave names to them. Three of the bees looked so similar, we figured they must have been triplets. These we named Pam, Sam and Mam. We found Sam in a nearby spider’s web one morning. That’s a story for another time.

I wish I could tell you that the story has a happy ending. Sadly, it does not. One day, when I carted Jack back to his house, his allergies flared up. He started sneezing a lot, so I dropped him in the patch of dandelions and ran behind nearby bushes in his yard. Unbeknownst to me, that’s where the bees nested. As I peered through the bushes toward the yellow patch of dandelions and my childhood friend, Jack, the bees stung me hundreds of times. I ran home crying. Jack and I never hung out again.

And that’s why yellow makes me sad, I think.

After you watch the related video, check out this yarn and this yarn!
