Chew on This

The Cincinnati Reds defeated the Chicago Cubs yesterday. The Reds hit seven home runs against the Cubs – for the second time in the 2008 season. No other team in major league history has hit seven home runs against the same opponent twice in the same season.

Baseball ventures into uncharted statistical territory each and every day; each game comes with a story.

If baseball’s statistical adventures aren’t entertaining enough, though, the unintended humor of pre-game broadcasts might suffice. The Reds’ pre-game broadcast, for example, featured a segment on how Wrigley Field feeds the tens of thousands of fans who attend each day’s games. As a lead-in to the bit, the broadcaster mentioned that vendors sell a staggering 15,000 hot dogs per game. Then the broadcaster said something to the effect of, “For more on how they feed all of these fans, let’s go straight to the horse’s mouth.”
